Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

By enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), you add an extra layer of protection that keeps your account secure even if your password is ever compromised.

What Is Discord Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of protection to your Discord account. Even if someone knows your password, they can't log in without your unique 2FA code.

Authenticator Apps

Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator (recommended)

Backup Codes

One-time recovery codes to store securely offline

Hardware Security Keys

Physical devices supporting FIDO2 or U2F standards

How To Enable 2FA on Discord

  1. Open Discord on your desktop or mobile device.
  2. Go to User Settings → My Account.
  3. Under Password and Authentication, click Enable Two-Factor Auth.
  4. Enter your password to confirm your identity.
  5. Scan the QR code using an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or Authy).
  6. Enter the 6-digit code from the app to finish setup.

Once enabled, you'll need to enter your 2FA code whenever you:

  • Log in to your Discord account
  • Access your account from a new device
  • Change security settings or passwords
Tip: Save your backup codes in a safe place. If you lose both your phone and backup codes, Discord cannot recover your account access.

How Discord Protects Your 2FA Data

  • Your 2FA keys are securely encrypted and never stored in plain text
  • Verification uses time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) for maximum security
  • Discord never stores your password; credentials are verified only on your device
  • Failed 2FA or login attempts trigger protective measures such as rate limits and security alerts

Best Practices for Strong Discord Security

  • Never share your 2FA or backup codes with anyone
  • Use a strong, unique password that you don't reuse on other platforms
  • Regularly check your Active Sessions under User Settings → Devices
  • Enable login notifications and immediately log out suspicious sessions
  • Keep your authenticator app updated to ensure ongoing compatibility and protection

Lost Access to Your Discord Authenticator?

If you've lost access to your authenticator app or phone, you can:

  • Use your Discord backup codes to log in
  • Disable and re-enable 2FA once you regain access to your account
  • If you can't recover access, reach out to Discord Support
For your security, Discord may ask for account verification such as your email, phone number, or payment details before restoring access.

Enabling 2FA is one of the best ways to secure your Discord account.
